Travel, Sports Fuel Rise In Hotel Construction

The centralized location of Fresno and Clovis makes it prime real estate for hotels and airline travel; less than a three-hour drive from the coast, an hour drive to national parks and with the region hosting multiple sporting events annually, the Valley has always seen many tourists — be it for business, leisure or both.

Recently, the groundbreaking of two hotels, a Holiday Inn Express adjacent to the Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT) and a Courtyard Marriott near the Downtown Fresno Convention Center, has bred hope in restimulating a local economy recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are definitely still seeing that the parks are the No. 1 reason that they’re coming here,” said Lisa Oliveira, president and CEO of the Fresno/Clovis Convention and Visitors Bureau. “What we are seeing though is that they’re not only going to the parks, but they’re staying an extra day in the area.”

With travel restrictions lifted last year, leisure travel has seen a resurgence of late, with 73% of people planning to travel within the next six months, according to a Symphony Tourism Economics study.

Business travel is also experiencing a resurgence, with 34% of individuals planning business-related travel within the next six months, according to the study.

Despite the average daily rate having risen by an average $20 throughout the Valley, Oliveira says the local industry still sees an average of 65-70% capacity.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in downtown Fresno for a new hotel on Tuesday.

Axis Hotel Group Inc. is building a Courtyard by Marriott at 808 M St., next to the Fresno Convention Center and across from the Saroyan Theatre.

This new addition will be the 7th hotel to the Axis Hotel Group portfolio.

The hotel will have 5 floors with 144 rooms, and a ballroom of about 3600 square feet.

This will help add an additional 144 rooms to the downtown Convention market for the City of Fresno.

The hotel will also offer Bar, Bistro, Starbucks and Catering onsite.

Construction will take about 2 years.

Construction to begin on new hotel near Fresno Yosemite International Airport

Travelers will soon have a new hotel to stay at while visiting the Central Valley.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday for the new hotel on East McKinley, near the Fresno Yosemite International Airport.

The Holiday Inn Express Airport will have 89 rooms.

This will be the sixth hotel added by the Axis Hotel Group in the Fresno-Clovis area.

Construction is expected to take about a year and a half, with the hotel opening in early 2024.

New Marriott hotel in Clovis holds grand opening

CLOVIS, Calif. (KFSN) -- A new hotel is up and running in Clovis.

The groundbreaking for the new Courtyard by Marriott was back in 2017 but after several delays due to the pandemic and shipping shortages, their doors officially opened on August 25th.

The grand opening was Thursday and general manager Hector Ramos said he wants to thank the community for their support and welcome new faces.

"This community and this area has been very open to keeping us open and keeping business alive. A lot of people from LA, many places, a lot of collegiate sports are keeping this place and people working," said general manager Hector Ramos.

He said with vaccination rates going up and sporting events taking place, they are seeing much of their traffic in the last month.

The luxury hotel is open for locals to stop by for the restaurant as well.

More than 200 people attended the ribbon-cutting.
